Guy Burns knocked back Ross Jackson’s hand on the John Kingston Memorial Trophy with a well fought draw against the stronger player. This places David Paul half a point in the lead, but, he will likely face Guy in the final game next week and will need to do better than a draw, to have a realistic chance of reclaiming this prize.

Arguably the key game of the night was current John Kingston Memorial Trophy champion—Alan Winfield—against former Trophy holder David Paul. Rook versus Knight ending looked like an easy win for Alan, but, in great Houdini fashion, David managed a draw, to share lead with Ross Jackson—both on 4 points.

The AGM was held Tuesday 02 February and last year’s Committee was virtually re-elected—main change being Alan Winfield is now Club Captain and David Paul Vice-Club Captain. Fees remain the same as last year, except for casual fees which increase to $3 per night for Juniors and $6 for Seniors. Further details of the AGM will be soon posted to our website.
After the AGM David Paul gave a quick lecture on the Colle System, an old favourite of the late Glenys Mills.
The Club was honoured to have Jonathan Sarfati in attendance—an old friend of the Club, not forgetting an International Master and former NZ Champion—who played a simultaneous exhibition against 10 players. David Paul distinguished himself with the only win against Jonathan—photos here.

Newbie—well for this year—Alan Winfield, continues to lead the field, but, current Kapiti Chess champion is sliding in his slipstream, only one point behind. Glyns Mills leads the B &C grades, and is closely followed by a keen pack. Look at our results for full details.

Club Champs are well under way and after 4 rounds Alan Winfield leads the field. It’s early days yet; with two more series to be played in this ultimate Kapiti Chess challenge. On another front, work is well under way revamping our website—there’s still more water to flow under this bridge and by the end of the year we should be all go—many thanks to Lars for his dedicated web-work.

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE DARK-HORSE WINS 2011 KAPITI RAPID CHESS TOURNAMENT
A northern hemisphere dark-horse scooped the top-prize at the 2011 Kapiti Rapid Chess Tournament held 8 October in Paraparaumu.
40 players player attended this important regional chess tournament. A new format was used this year with 6 rounds within 3 separate tournaments within the Rapid, players reported this switch to be a great success.FIDE Master (FM) Ben Hague pipped NZ Champion International Master (IM) Anthony Ker and Grand Master (correspondence) Mark Noble by a clear point. Pundits expected the Ker versus Noble game to be the Tournament’s decider, but Hague was unbeaten on the day with 5 wins— however, he was held to respectable draw by FM Scott Wastney.
Palmerston North and Kapiti players played exceptionally well. Twins Michael and Daniel Yuan (Palmerston North) won the B Grade. Kapiti’s local chess champion David Paul and talented junior player, Itay Ben-Dom, along with Palmerston North’s Jack James (current under NZ under 14 Rapid champion) came runners-up, followed by Kapiti’s Alastair McGowan and Club President Guy Burns.
The C Grade was also won by junior players, a reflection of how strong and popular NZ junior chess has become. Henry Li and Layla Timergaze wining this section. Kapiti players; Mighty Mike O’Rorke and Joe Tyler followed closely, on 3 points.

2010 Kapiti Rapid
The Kapiti Rapid was held on 5 September 2010. The tournament attracted 25 players, down from normal attendance numbers as the event was held on Father’s Day. Five players with a rating of 2000 plus were in attendance including eleventh-time New Zealand champion IM Anthony Ker and former New Zealand champ IM Russell Dive. Top New Zealand Junior Alan Ansell and local Kapiti player Johnny Hynes helped to make up the field of six in the Junior class.
Sunday was bleak and grey, which helped players focus on the high calibre of chess being played. Kapiti member Alistair McGowan had an outstanding day beating Chris Burns and drawing against Brian Nijman to win the B grade section. David Paul finished a respectable 2nd, followed by Stuart Holdaway, Anil Jhurani, Andrew Brockway and Lawrence Farrington.
B Grade winners dominated by the Kapiti Chess Club’s Alistair McGowan (front right, winner)
and fellow club mate David Paul (front left, 2nd). 3rd place-getters (from left): Stewart Holdaway, Anil Jhurani,
Andrew Brockway and Lawrence Farrington. The dynamic duo of Anthony Ker and Russell Dive shared first place in the A grade section. Brian Nijman was runner-up and gave Anthony Ker a run for his money in round five—with seconds on his clock Brian had opportunities for a possible win, certainly a draw, but Anthony played with his normal clinical precision to bring a pawn forward for queening, thus sealing the game.
A grade winners. 1st equal: IM Russell Dive and IM Anthony Ker (reigning NZ chess champion). 3rd place: Brian Nijman (middle).
Up and coming Junior Alan Ansell from New Plymouth took the Top Junior prize.
Top junior on the day (and NZ wide) Alan Ansell being congratulated by Kapiti Chess Club President Guy Burns.
In the C Grade, Bob List and junior James Jack shared first prize, followed by William Qihao Zhang, Kapiti’s Johnny Hynes, Jacky Zeng, Brian Luo and John Ansell.
C Grade winners. 1st equal: Bob List (left, adult) and James Jack (front, immediate right of Bob—junior). 3rd equal (from left) William Qihao Zhang, Johnny Hynes, Jacky Zeng, Brian Luo and John Ansell.
The Tournament was a resounding success and Kapiti Chess Club has been asked to consider running it twice a year to help compensate for the lack of regular tournaments in the Wellington area.

2009 Kapiti Rapid
Sunday 20 September 2009. A field of 38 players ensured the annual Kapiti Rapid 6 round tournament was another success. Anthony Ker wiped the field clean with an impressive 6 point sweep—perhaps his most difficult game of the day was round one against the mighty Kapiti Chess Club battler, Mike O’Rorke who played a brilliant 62 move game with some draw potentials? Junior Alan Ansell and Wellington’s Ross Jackson played above their weights and finished with an impressive 4.5 points, along with Edward Lee and former Kapiti player Martin Hill.
Kapiti’s David Paul and Dennis Sosnoski kept the top B grade prize in Kapiti’s hands for a second year running with 3.5 point finishes. Junior Ryan Hill also played well in this grade with 3 points along with Kapiti’s Mike O’Rorke. Argentinian Sebastian Manzt supply of Mate tea possibly helped him to also finish with 3 points in the B Grade.
Anil Jhurane took the C Grade prize, with 3.5 points—this result will boost his rating—followed closely on 3, by Juniors Michael Yuan, Tawan Sunathvanichka, and James Stewart.
The Junior prize was shared by Ryan Lee, Pasan Pahalawatta and David Kweon—names to be watched closely as future champions maybe?
