After the penultimate night of the Leo Eichholtz Trophy, David Paul pulls into the lead a clear point ahead of rival Alan Winfield. With one more night to go David must sail a steady course to reclaim this Trophy, but Alan has a chance to blow the wind from David’s sails, as they a due to play each other next round.

Series Three of the Leo Eichholtz Trophy continues and the gap is starting to narrow for the leader board.
Alan Winfield and David Paul are neck and neck, very closely followed by a pack of several players within cooee.
Guy Burns, Alan Winfield and Ross Jackson attended a very successful Hutt Rapid, with Ross finishing a respectable 3rd in the A grade—results here.

Series Three of the Leo Eichholtz Trophy has begun.
Competition is fierce with David Paul catching Alan Winfield to share the lead—both on 14 points, with Guy Burns lurking behind 12.5
It’s going to be a close finish

The second round of the Blitz Tournament was played and current Trophy holder Lars Dobbertin-King continues to led the field.
But, it is close—with a bevy of players close behind.
Next week we start the final Leo Eichholtz series, not the Freebird Trophy as previously advertised.

Series Two of our Leo Eichholtz Trophy is now finished and Guy Burns takes this series with 7 points.
Alan Winfield is overall leader, but stormy seas have hampered his lead and David Paul is only one point behind with a final third Series to be played.

Blitz games will be played next week, followed by two nights of our Freebird Trophy.

Guy Burns leads the 2^nd Series of our Leo Eichholtz Trophy, but overall leader is Alan Winfield, 1.5 points clear of David Paul. We have two more games to go in this Series, then a break—with a Blitz night, followed by 2 nights of the Freebird Trophy—before the 3^rd Series of the Leo Eichholtz starts.

Alan Winfield full steams ahead in the Leo Eichholtz  Trophy—one and a half points clear from his nearest rival. Still room for plenty to happen in this 3 series Tournament.
Next week we will have the final round of the first series of our Leo Eichholtz Trophy.
This will be followed by a session on Opening Principals and Development from Club Captain Alan Winfield.
There will be no Gambit night as previously advertised.
There’s been a lot of rook endings at the Club lately, that should be drawn games. When there are rooks left on the board and your opponent has a pawn, you should still be able to draw if you understand the Philidor position—for more info Here.

This Tournament will be a marathon—3 series of eight rounds.

Next week we have the first round of our Blitz Trophy which returns to a 5 minute per player format.

Club members Guy Burns and David Paul attended the classic Wellington Easter Open, 6 round Swiss format with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds a move. Scott Wastney took out this iconic Tournament which has been played since 1943. Check out some photos.

Guy Burns knocked back Ross Jackson’s hand on the John Kingston Memorial Trophy with a well fought draw against the stronger player. This places David Paul half a point in the lead, but, he will likely face Guy in the final game next week and will need to do better than a draw, to have a realistic chance of reclaiming this prize.

Key game in the John Kingston Memorial Trophy was Ross Jackson against current Trophy holder Alan Winfield. In a game with opposite castled Kings, Ross’s pawn rush was triumphant over Alan’s counter attack. Natalie Bowles recent strong run came to a grinding halt against David Paul. 

Arguably the key game of the night was current John Kingston Memorial Trophy champion—Alan Winfield—against former Trophy holder David Paul. Rook versus Knight ending looked like an easy win for Alan, but, in great Houdini fashion, David managed a draw, to share lead with Ross Jackson—both on 4 points.
