  • President Guy Burns is away and returns early 2018.
    We welcome Alan Winffield to the weekly Newsletter helm.
    Alan begins:

    With the Penultimate round of the FreeBird tournament completed on Tuesday 22nd August, Alan Winfield won all four of his games to increase his lead to two points. With four games left only David Paul can catch him. See Top 3 standings below. Full Tournament Chart will be on the Notice Board on Tuesday.
    With only Four games left, members are encouraged to attend to ensure sufficient numbers are present to complete the round.
    This coming Tuesday we are going to trial opening at 7.00pm so that the juniors (we have 3!!!) can have some game time to not only have friendly games with themselves but also to provide them with some tuition to help them develop.
    Should any general member wish to come in a little earlier please feel free to drop in.

  • Alan Winfield continues to head off David Paul, by one point in the Freebird Trophy. 2 more nights to go then our Holy Grail of Chess Tourneys begins:  Club Champ time!

  • After 3 nights of the Freebird Trophy,  Alan Winfield, with 11 points, has a slight edge on David Paul (10 points). Still room for possibilities with 3 nights more play to flow under the bridge.

  • Strong play by David Paul propels him well in front of the Blitz competition—with one more round to go it will be hard to catch him—full results below. It was good to see Earl Roberts back at the Club after a long sabbatical of 11 years-.
    Next week we start the Freebird Trophy—10 minutes plus 5 second add-on timeframe.

  • Play in the John Kingston Memorial Trophy is over. Congratulations goes out to Ross Jackson, winner of this Trophy — final results below.

  • A strong win by Ross Jackson over David Paul, propels Ross into a one point lead (with one round to go) for the John Kingston Memorial. Alan Winfield is one point behind and has a chance of tying with Ross.

  • Good wins by Alastair McGowan and Guy Burns have muddied the waters. With two rounds to go, Ross Jackson has 3 players within cooee of catching his lead of one point.

  • In an exciting finish, Ross Jackson finished Gordon Lyall to cement his lead in the John Kingston Memorial Trophy

  • The 2nd round of the John Kingston Memorial Trophy is well underway with Ross Jackson slowly sliding ahead.

  • David Paul takes out the second series of Blitz.
    Next we play the John Kingston Memorial Trophy—55 minutes plus a 5 second add-on.

  • After 16 games of combative chess, congratulations to David Paul who wins the Leo Eichholtz Trophy.

  • With only two rounds to go in the Leo Eichholtz Trophy, David Paul leads by a smidgeon—half a point ahead of Alan Winfield. Detailed results here.

    He also leads the Glenys Mills Grand Prix Trophy.

  • The first series of our Leo Eichholtz  Trophy—25 Minute plus 5 Second Timeframe—is well underway with Alan Winfield one point ahead of a strong pack nipping at his heels.

  • First two games of the Leo Eichholtz Board—25 minutes plus 5 second add on—was played with a small field of 8 players; it’s early days yet and more water needs to flow under the bridge before any favourites emerge….

  • Our first Blitz match of the year has been played and David Paul is a comfortable 2 points clear of Guy Burns and Ross Jackson.

  • The first Series of the John Kingston Memorial Trophy has finished and Ross Jackson and Alan Winfield vie and tie for the lead, closely followed by a marauding pack of players.  There’s one more Series to go to decide the winner….Detailed results here.

  • A sudden victory over Alan Winfield nudged David Paul into the joint lead with Ross Jackson in play for the John Kingston Memorial Trophy. One more round to go for this Series.
