The third round of the John Kingston Memorial Trophy 60-60 saw mighty Mike O’Rorke undertake another upset win — this time over, at that time, Tournament co-leader — Zoe Kingston — in an impressive 17 moves. This places Mike into the heaving and fluid pack of six players on two points, pursuing Paul Frost on 3 points. Has Paul got the stamina and strength to carry him through the next four rounds? The next couple of weeks may determine the result.Tim Robert’s pawn move to g6 has top rapid player John Whibley looking slightly worried and perplexed — should he take the pawn or take the free Bishop on d3 with his Knight? Luckily for John he left the poisoned Bishop, but took g6 with his f pawn and soon went on to win the game.
Earl Roberts, a former Kapiti Champion, has donated 122 historical Kapiti Chess Club games from his large archive depository. They are available here in PGN file format. If you are not sure how to open a PGN file, send us an email. -
Tricia Benny kept her cool against a stalwart Rick Lowe to eventual produce a victory in a close game that could have gone either way.
Tricia Benny’s (left) steely determination has Rick Lowe perched on the edge of his seat
Mike O’Rorke (in the background, left) fails to take gain an advantage after a promising prickly
attack against highly seeded Dennis Sosnoski — who eventually travailed to prevail.Zoe Kingston — currently ranked in the top 10 ten of current NZ Women players — produced a sensation win against reigning 30-30 Champion David Paul. It will take a gallant effort from the other players on 2 points — Dennis Sosnoski and/or David Paul to reign Zoe in. The question is —will they be able to?
On 13 July the Reserve Grade 60-60 will be postponed as most players will be on a school camp.

Rose Kingston has taken the Reserve Grade 30-30 Tournament ahead of top junior player Johnny Hynes. A long time stalwart of the Club, Rose played consistently and deserved her win, which takes her into the Standard Grade field for the John Kingston 60-60 Memorial Trophy, which started tonight.

Round One of the John Kingston 60-60 Memorial Trophy Standard Grade has been played. Perhaps the upset result of the year goes to Mighty Mike O’Rorke’s win, in 12 moves, over a recently returned, slightly rusty John Whibley—welcome back John! The 60-60 Reserve Grade starts next week.
-
A supercharged David Paul managed to fight off a strong offence from former Kapiti Chess Club champion — but out of recent Chess-club practice — Earl Roberts, to take out Round Two of the 2009 Blitz Tournament. Zoe Kingston and Paul Frost shared a respectable third place. Over the six rounds Paul Frost came out top, but lost to Earl Roberts in the Semi-final round.
Overall David Paul and Zoe Kingston head the field — but it is early days yet — and with Earl Roberts and John Whibley joining the competition —anything can happen…..

Don’t forget a Blitz Tournament next week and the Reserve Grade will commence the final round on 29 April 2009.
-
Today sees the launch of this Website. The site is still being developed and feedback is welcomed.
Blitz games will be played next week 22 April, set two of the five round series for the 2009 Cup.
After feedback from members the Reserve Grade finals have been postponed until after the School Holidays—resumes 29 April for the last two rounds. The Leo Eichholtz Board Standard will finish this week—15 April 2009.Rose Kingston consolidates her led in the Reserve Grade and looks unstoppable.
In the Standard Grade, favourite David Paul was unexpectedly beaten by Tim Roberts in a shock result. This has allowed Zoe Kingston and Guy Burns to slip into the lead by half a point. Next week will decide the winner/s in this close competition. Dennis Sosnoski and Paul Frost have the ability to upset the leaders’ apple carts, and these games may decide the fate of the Tournament.

Many thanks to Mike O’Rorke for organising the Club T-Shirts – I believe nine were ordered at this stage.
The 30-30 dramatically warms up:
Rose and Johnny stride ahead neck and neck, in the Reserve Grade — who will keep their nerve and come through ahead? Or will Chris Carr make a late run?
David Paul strategically uses a several draws to creep ahead in the Standard Grade—but the question is can he maintain consistency?
Below is the table for this event. Please check this for accuracy. The shaded Grey areas represent late entries or a withdrawal. Note that late entries get a 0.5 point allocation.
The yellow section shows a win by default (+), that is, a win through an opponent not turning up to play their game, shown as a minus (-).Leo Eichholtz

Don’t forget to bring a T-Shirt and some money for Mike on Wednesday, for those who want a Club T-Shirt. Mike has also persuaded the Club to subsidise the Shirts by $5 for the first 20 members who have paid their full Subscriptions to Zoe (Treasurer).
The 30-30 continues to enthral and entertain the combatants.
In the Reserve Johnny and Rose lead Part B, closely followed by Chris and Josh.
The Standard Grade saw some sparks fly with David beating Guy last week, Paul, Dennis and Zoe are also unbeaten in this Section. The games this week may define the overall winner of the Tournament. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Mike O’Rorke has asked me to remind you about Kapiti Chess Club T-Shirts, which he has organised the printing of.
All you need is get a shirt and give Mike a few dollars and he will arrange the printing. Speak to Mike on Wednesday for further details. -
Welcome to two new players who started last week — Matthew McGregor (Junior) and Colin Carter (Senior).
Below, are the latest results for our Swiss run, 30-30 Tournament, after Game Six, played 11 March.Rose leads the Reserve Grade, followed very closely by an impressive Johnny Hynes and Chris Carr.
I lead the Standard Grade, with David Paul breathing down my back — But, we are both wary of, the more than capable, Paul Frost hot on our heels.
Unseeded Dennis Sosnoski, is a possible dark-horse worth watching next week, as he will face some tough and testing competition.Next week is the final round for this section of the 30-30, and we start a new and final section of eight rounds over the following four weeks.
30-30 Tournament is the person, or persons, who scores the highest points over both the two sections. There is a trophy for the winner of the Reserve Grade, and the winner of the Standard Grade recieves the John Kingston Memorial Trophy.
