Great result for Itai Ben-Dom who scored  a well-deserved win against highly rated Brendon Reedy to position himself as leader in the race for the JKM Trophy. Is anyone able to topple this talented junior from the throne? We now have two more rounds in this series, immediately followed by a 6 round return set. So there is time for others to develop a serious strategy to disarm Itai and take out the title.

The John Kingston Memorial Trophy resumes Wednesday 2 June at our normal time of 7:30.

Unfortunately there was no chess tonight. We all turned up to the Library at our normal time of 7:30 to be told that due to a malfunction in the alarm system, members could not access the building.

Don’t forget that there is no Kapiti Chess Club meeting for next week—26 May (or for Monday 24 May) due to an extra-ordinary committee meeting of the Kapiti Coast District Council.

For Chess aficionados there will be informal games on 26 May at the Big Chill Pub at 3 Raumati Road from 7:30pm.

The John Kingston Memorial Trophy resumes 2 June at our normal time of 7:30.

We are quarter way through the John Kingston Memorial Trophy [two 6 round series]. Brendan Reedy is starting to develop his form and leads the field. He is bound to strike some fierce opposition over the next three weeks as he strives to stay on top. Top junior, Itay Ben-Dom is a half point behind and these two players may meet over the board next week. Nearly half the club follows on 2 points. Results are below. We also welcome back Ian Liddell who has returned from a warm holiday in Hawaii.

The Club welcomes Brendan Reedy (rated 2012) to this year’s competition—Brendan may be a bit rusty as he resumes club chess, but his presence may cause some worry for players who have dominated previous competitions.

The John Kingston Memorial Trophy has started with the first round starting tonight. This tournament will be over 12 rounds—two six-round series—one round per night. There will be a break between the rounds—either a blitz or fun night.

David Paul clipped the field to win all 6 games on Night 2 of the Blitz Cup series [5 nights over 2010]. David’s strongest opposition was his son Christie—whose current form makes him a strong contender in the Junior grade. Itay Ben-Dom is another strong player with potential to give A grade players a run for their money.

Next week [28 April] we begin the John Kingston Trophy [55 minutes, plus 5 seconds timeframe]. The Tournament will be a double round, six round Swiss-run tournament.

The Leo Eichholtz Board [25 minutes plus 5 seconds per move] competition is now over. Congratulations 1) to Zoe Kingston—who takes the Board: and to 2) Itay Ben-Dom, winner of the Junior section and second place over all in the club. Full results of the tournament are below

Next week is the second round in our 5 minute series. This is followed by the start of our John Kingston Memorial trophy, which will be either 60 minutes timeframe or 55 minute plus 10 seconds per move—timeframe to be decided by committee next week.

30-30 Leo Eichholtz Board—17 February to 14 April 2010
