2008 Kapiti Rapid Tournament

Kapiti Chess Club held it’s annual national-level rapid play chess competition, the Jim McIntosh ‘Shoemaker’ Tournament, on Sunday, 21 September at the Kapiti Community Centre, Ngahina Street, Paraparaumu. 49 players attended the event which was described as “an outstanding success” by tournament director and Kapiti Chess Club president Guy Burns.

Zita Rajcsanyi the past woman’s Hungarian chess whiz was a surprise attendance at  the tournament. The former companion of the late chess super-star Bobby Fischer played well but was out of practice and unable to match the form of Wellington’s International Master Russell Dive who took out the premier prize at the event.

Kapiti players performed well with David Paul winning the B grade section and Megan Du Plessis sharing the junior’s first prize. The tournament was well supported by lower North Island players and the attendance by 19 junior players is a positive sign that the future of Zealand chess is on a sound footing.

Results:

A grade: 1st Russell Dive (IM), 2nd Nick Croad
B grade: 1st David Paul, 2nd equal Stewart Holdaway, Lawrence Farrington, Alan Ansell (Junior) and Andrew Brockway
C grade: 1st equal Yamin Imtiaz, Henry Wylde and Tim Sullivan (all juniors)
